Archive references and provenance
References identify records and preserve their relationship with the body or context that created them.
A catalogue reference is an archival identifier. It should not be treated as proof that every statement within the record is correct or that the creating body still exists.
Provenance records who created or accumulated the material and helps researchers understand why it exists. Series and collection context can be as important as the individual item.
